Lala Land (Damien Chazelle, 2016): The tear-jerking love story

Now we can imagine what a Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone film is like: beautiful; eye-catching; heartbreaking. The pair certainly do make a good film together, it's just like Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet; they're meant to be together but we just know that it's never going to happen. This is what makes Lala Land so tear-jerking. The inevitable love story evokes the emotions that we don't like to show, we can't help but get emotional when the pair argue or if there is any conflict, it just moves us. This film won in every category it was nominated for in the 74th golden globe awards, and won 6 academy awards for best director, best actress, best cinematography, best original score, best original song and best production design. Even though with all of these awards, is it still as good as hyped up to be?

The most important thing that definitely stood out was the colour palette and cinematography. It felt so natural and calming. The sky being the most striking of all. The contrast of the oranges and the blues that blend into the purples make it truly mesmerising. It makes you feel warm and you cant help but stare in awe at it. And as said earlier, the cinematography makes the whole film flow so smoothly., with use of long shots, tracking and two shots to create that emotional connection with the characters for the spectator, thus making the end of the narrative a lot more harder to accept, damn you Chazelle!

The changes in season in correlation to Mia's (Emma Stone) dress also help us differ the time of year, with the signature bright yellow dress that makes the character stand out, knowing that she is the protagonist also highlight the importance of the character. Mia and Sebastian (Ryan Gosling) are such lovable characters, as we can also relate to them. Mia is an aspiring actress who strives to succeed in this career, jumping from audition to audition, but even though she gets rejected, she still picks herself up and tries again, which the determination we all have in ourselves. The perception that we all want to achieve the best helps us understand the issues Mia faces. Sebastian is in the same boat, an endeavouring jazz musician who wants his own night club dedicated to jazz music. He's such a charming character and we find him so captivating and alluring, even though his slightly cockiness and rude behaviour at the beginning makes us stressed, he was a boisterous character throughout.

This film themes are most certainly about following dreams; love; and music. The cliché musical scores linked with the cinematography is catchy and alluring, and the film as a whole certainly has next to no flaws. I would say that this is one of the best musicals I have watched in my lifetime, but thats a subjective opinion of course considering that I have watched only 4 musicals. Nevertheless, this is a film that anyone could enjoy.
